Buck Knives has manufactured fixed blade and folding knives in America since 1902, when Hoyt Buck developed a tempering process for better edge retention. Four generations later, that heat treatment expertise remains central to their manufacturing.
The Buck 110 Folding Hunter changed the knife industry in 1964 with its lockback design strong enough to handle fixed blade tasks. Today it remains Buck's most recognized model alongside the 112 Ranger (a compact version of the 110), the 119 Special fixed blade, and the 102 Woodsman. These designs established what people now generically call a "buck knife" - any lockback folder with brass bolsters and wood handles.
Heat Treatment and Steel
Buck runs most of their production knives in 420HC stainless steel, hardened to 57-58 HRC through their Paul Bos heat treatment process. While 420HC is considered entry-level steel, Buck's cryogenic heat treatment - developed by metallurgist Paul Bos and now operated by Paul Farner - delivers about 50% better edge retention than standard 420HC. The steel sharpens easily on basic stones and resists corrosion well. For those wanting premium performance, Buck offers S30V versions of popular models like the 110 and 119 at higher price points.
Models and Construction
Buck's lineup covers everyday carry folders, hunting fixed blades, fillet knives, and outdoor tools. The 110 Folding Hunter comes in multiple variants including lightweight versions, automatic deployment, and different blade shapes (clip point and drop point). Fixed blade hunters like the 119 Special, 102 Woodsman, and 103 Skinner use full tang construction with phenolic or Dymondwood handles. Their fillet knives, particularly the 148 Hookset, feature flexible blades for cleaning fish.
Every Buck knife carries their Forever Warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship for life. Damaged knives can often be repaired for a fee at their facility.
